Raise Your Glass: The Brewery at the Ѹ Brings Home Silver Medal In New York State Craft Beer Competition

Winning Brew Created as Student Class Project

Hyde Park, NYThe Brewery at the Ѹ, an educational facility at Ѹ created in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery, has been awarded a silver medal in the , held this past weekend in Rochester. Its Class Project Stay Sharp Saison, a beer created by Ѹ bachelor’s degree students in the Art and Science of Brewing course, competed against 15 other beers to earn the medal in the Belgian Farmhouse category. More than 700 beers from more than 140 breweries were entered in the competition, which was judged by a panel of more than 40 brewers and beer experts. The beer—along with the other competition winners—will be served at , which runs August 23–September 4 in Syracuse. The competition is hosted by the Raise A Glass Foundation.

The Brewery at the Ѹ is primarily a classroom where bachelor’s-level students learn about the ingredients, equipment, and techniques required to produce ales and lagers in the Art and Science of Brewing course. The class, introduced in 2015, helps future food professionals think differently about beer, elevating its status as a fine beverage on a level with wine.

“We're thrilled to win a silver medal for our Class Project Stay Sharp Saison in the Taste NY Governor’s Cup Craft Beer Competition,” said Hutch Kugeman, head brewer at The Brewery at the Ѹ. “Breweries across New York are crafting amazing beer and the fact that we won for a beer created with help from the students in the Art and Science of Brewing class is especially gratifying to both Professor John Fischer and me.”

Kugeman’s beers have won numerous awards at events including the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, North American Beer Awards, and TAP New York Craft Beer and Food Festival. Before joining The Brewery at the Ѹ, Kugeman was founding brewer at Crossroads Brewing Company in Athens, NY, which won The Matthew Vassar Brewers’ Cup for Best Craft Beer Brewery in the Hudson Valley and the inaugural John Calen Memorial Award for best Pale Ale in New York State.
