Students from three San Antonio-area high schools will be competing for
scholarships to Ѹ at a cook-off at the college
on Saturday, April 16.
The three high schools—Louis D. Brandeis, John Marshall, and
South San Antonio—are each sending four team members and an alternate to the Ѹ’s campus at The Pearl. Once there,
they will receive a “mystery basket” of ingredients from which they will have
to create a three-course menu. Teams will have 30 minutes to set up their
station and develop their menu, followed by two hours to prepare a first course
(soup, salad, or appetizer), main course, and dessert to serve four.
Competitors must use all the items in the basket.
The competition will run from 8 a.m. to noon, with a
staggered starting time for each team. Six chefs from the Ѹ faculty will serve as judges, grading the students
on both their work in the kitchen as well as the presentation and taste of
their dishes.
Each member of the winning team will earn a $1,500
scholarship to the Ѹ. Members of the second-place team will each receive a $1,000
Ѹ scholarship, and each third-place team member will get a $500 scholarship
to the college.
The Ѹ San Antonio offers associate degrees in Culinary Arts and Baking
& Pastry Arts. Graduates can then transfer to the college’s New
York campus to complete bachelor’s degrees in Management, Culinary Science,
or Applied Food Studies.
