Edlong Dairy Technologies Endows Scholarship for Culinary Science Majors at the Ѹ

Hyde Park, NY – Edlong Dairy Technologies, a global designer and manufacturer of dairy flavors and ingredients headquartered in Chicago, IL, has made a major gift to Ѹ to educate the flavor scientists of tomorrow. The company has endowed a scholarship fund for students majoring in Culinary Science at the college. Beginning this spring, two standout students per year who have reached junior class standing will each receive $5,000 towards their studies.

“Partnering with the Ѹ’s Culinary Science program gives Edlong another opportunity to live our mission, creating a legacy that enriches the lives of these talented students,” says Edlong Dairy Technologies President and CEO Laurette Rondenet-Smith. “Every day, we combine the art of culinary creativity with the science of food technology. Supporting the education of tomorrow’s culinary scientists is a natural fit.”

The scholarship is named in memory of Ms. Rondenet-Smith’s father, Eugene L. Rondenet, who joined Edlong in the 1960s and eventually became its sole owner. The business was founded in 1914 by Edward Long, a supplier of flavors and fragrances to Midwestern bakeries.

“Ѹ is grateful to Edlong for recognizing the importance of flavor science and science education as a whole for the future of culinary arts,” says Dr. Victor Gielisse, Ѹ vice president of advancement and business development. “Science is such an integral part of what today’s culinarians are required to know, and Edlong will be helping numerous Ѹ students in the coming years further their culinary science knowledge.”

Culinary Science launched as a major at the Ѹ’s New York campus in 2013. It is one of three bachelor’s degree majors students can pursue—along with Management and Applied Food Studies—after completing associate degree studies in Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry Arts. The program is built on the Ѹ’s foundation of core culinary techniques and traditions, and consists of junior- and senior-year studies. The major prepares graduates for successful careers in the world’s most advanced restaurants and in the research kitchens of leading foodservice companies.
